Steps and calories calculator

Uses the ACSM walking equation, which counts incline. Steps use a stride of about 41% of your height.

Standing desk height calculator

Your desk needs to sit at elbow height while you stand on the pad. Elbow height is about 63% of your height; we add the pad's deck and the incline lift.

How to choose a walking pad with incline

A walking pad is a low, compact treadmill built for walking. Most have no handlebar, a top speed of 6 to 8 km/h and a deck slim enough to slide under a sofa or bed. Adding incline tilts the belt up at the front, so every step works a little harder. That matters at a desk, because you can't walk fast while typing, but you can walk uphill.

Fixed, manual or auto incline

Pads sold "with incline" do it in three ways. Fixed incline pads sit at one angle, usually 5% to 8%. Manual incline pads have flip-down feet or a lever to set a few angles. Auto incline pads have a motor that lifts the deck while you walk, often 12% to 15%, and are the only type that suits hill workouts like 12-3-30 (12% incline, 3 mph, 30 minutes). If you just want a bit more effort while you work, a fixed or manual incline is enough and cheaper.

Speed: walking only or walk and run

Under-desk pads usually stop at 6 km/h, which is a brisk walk. "2 in 1" models have a fold-up handle and go to 10 or 12 km/h for jogging. If you only walk while working, a 6 km/h pad is quieter and lighter. If you want runs too, check the motor (2.5 HP or more) and belt length (at least 100 cm).

Max user weight and belt size

Most budget pads are rated to 100 to 120 kg. If you are near the limit, pick a pad rated at least 20 kg above your weight; it will run cooler and last longer. Belts are usually 38 to 45 cm wide. Wider belts feel safer while you look at a screen.

Noise and flats

Walking pads are quiet compared with treadmills, but the thud of footsteps carries through floors. In a flat, use a dense mat under the pad, keep to a walking pace and check reviews for motor whine. Incline pads can be a touch louder when the lift motor runs.

Space and storage

A typical pad is around 120 to 145 cm long, 50 to 60 cm wide and 12 to 16 cm high, and weighs 18 to 30 kg. Foldable pads halve the length for storage. Check the folded height if it needs to fit under a bed.

Frequently asked questions

Is a walking pad with incline worth it? Yes, if you walk at a desk or want more from short sessions. Walking at a 5% to 10% incline uses noticeably more energy than walking flat at the same speed, without going faster.

What incline do I need? Most people use 3% to 10%. Choose 12% to 15% auto incline for hill workouts.

Can I use an incline walking pad under a desk? Yes. Use the desk height calculator above, because the incline and deck both raise you.
